CNR Passenger Images

Many of the CNR passenger cars on my layout are the products of Canadian manufacturer Athabasca Scale Models. I enjoy building the Athabasca kits and in addition to the CNR kits, I have also built CPR and VIA Rail kits. Athabasca CNR kits that I have built and painted (gotta love this scheme to paint it) include the Coach, the I Series, E series, Bay, Green, Mount and Valley sleeping cars, the Dining car, the dinette-dormitory car, the White 8 section dinette car, the Cape buffet-lounge car and the Lake Parlor car, baggage and baggage-dormitory cars . I have used the Athabasca, stainless steel end doors, American Builders diaphrams and included roof detail specific to each car, including hatch's where appropriate and roof grab irons and ladder rests. As well, my tail car, Mount Fitzwilliam, includes Athabasca end gates and Kirlin Scale Models marker lamps.

When CNR first took delivery of passenger cars from Pullman-Standard in 1954, several were leased back to P-S for operation in Canada and the US. These cars were identified by the word "Pullman" on both ends of the car.

Rapido trains have released components which can be used to improve Athabasca cars. After the release of their CNR coach, “E” series sleeper and “Bay” series sleeper, Rapido Trains made available completely assembled under-bodies for these cars and I quickly took advantage of this by updating my Athabasca coaches, “E” and “Bay” sleepers with Rapido under-bodies. Examination of photos and drawings in “The Official Pullman-Standard Library” revealed that P-S cars such as “Mount” Sleepers, “White” Dinette-Sleepers, “Valley” Buffet-Sleepers and “Lake” 34 seat Parlor cars had all of the same under-body components as an “E” series sleeper, however they were located differently. Consequently, I purchased additional Rapido “E” series under-bodies and re-arranged the under-body components such that they would be correct for these cars.

The following images include those Athabasca cars I have updated with Rapido underbodies. The coach, E sleepers and Bay sleepers represent cars with the representative Rapido underbodies, the remainder had their underbody components removed then reinstalled in the correct location.

The following images show Athabasca cars which I have constructed without Rapido underbodies. Some have underbody components as best I could estimate.

I have also purchased and assembled several kits from Canadian manufacturer, the BGR Group.

Following are additional passenger equipment on my layout. Brillant Cove is a Walthers 4-4-2 sleeper that I simply painted. CN acquired this car second hand from NYC. The RDC-1 is a factory painted Proto 1000 model.

I have used the CN Lines SIG Scalecoat paints and CN Lines Sig decals produced by Microscale on the passenger cars that I have completed. Window frames are hand painted. Once each car is complete, a clear overcoat is applied.
